HD Satellite TV broadcast signals are sent through the Earth’s communications satellites. The satellite is positioned either in highly-elliptical or in geostationary orbit; that is 37,000 km above the Earth’s equator.

Technically speaking, the beginnings of satellite television was started by the Europeans and Americans in 1962 through Telstar satellite. In 1963, Syncom 2 became the world’s first ever geosynchronous communication satellite. It was on April 6, 1965 that satellite television was introduced commercially. The Russians introduced the Orbita, the first national network of satellite television in 1967. And the rest is history.

At present HD Satellite TVs are following sets of international standards. These include the MPEG2 and the DVB-S open standards. For security reasons, HD Satellite TV manufacturers are using different encryption systems.

The main components of the HD Satellite TV are the programming sources, the broadcast center, the satellite, the satellite dish, and the receiver. The programming sources are the TV channels (such as Discovery Channel and ESPN), the broadcast center is the core of the system (it accepts signals from the programming sources), the satellite is the rebroadcaster of the received signals, the satellite dish collects the satellite’s transmission, and the receiver routes and decodes the signal to the TV.

HD Satellite TV gets their list of programs or channels from a direct broadcast satellite (DBS) or more commonly known as "Direct-To-Home" provider. This system applies the Ku transmission band and C-band radio. The largest Satellite providers are DirecTV and Dish Network HDTV Satellite Service.

These providers are able to offer tremenously more high definition tv programming than cable, from around the world. Satellite tv enables you to select programming from different countries and languages, from Spanish language to Chinese language channels.

Whether it is premium movie channels such as HBO, Cinemax , Showtime etc. the viewing choices seem endless. Sports from around the world as well as local and regional broadcasts are only a click of the remote away. The childrens fare is quite extensive as is the educational broadcast selection.

Satellite radio is another advantage that is available to you when you get hd satellite tv. Cable of course does not offer this option of receiving uninterrupted and commercial free cd quality broadcasts.

The advantage that hd satellite tv has over cable is the extensive high definition broadcast selection that is unmatched by cable. The cost of this superior hd broadcast offering is lower and most importantly is the excellent customer service and reliability offered by the satellite tv providers. The biggest benefit now available to viewers is the benefit of choice.

No longer is the consumer bound to only one means of receiving television broadcasts, they have a choice. Voting with their wallet more consumers are choosing hd satellite tv.
